Indications for use – what Amoxil is used for
Amoxil contains amoxicillin, which is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. This medicine is an antibiotic of the penicillin series. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
This antibiotic only treats bacterial infections. This will not work for viral infections (such as colds, flu). Using any antibiotic when not needed can result in it not working for future infections. Amoxicillin is also used with other drugs to treat stomach ulcers caused by the bacteria H. pylori and to prevent recurrence of the ulcers.
The price of Amoxicillin in the Czech Republic varies, but in general generic amoxicillin is cheaper than its brand name.
How to take Amoxil
Take amoxicillin by mouth, with or without food, as directed by your doctor, usually every 8 or 12 hours. The dosage depends on your medical condition and response to treatment.
Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
For best results, take Amoxil at regular intervals. To help you remember, take this medicine at the same time every day.
Continue taking Amoxil until the entire prescribed dose is used up, even if the symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping treatment too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which can lead to a recurrence of the infection.
Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
Possible side effects
Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
The use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may lead to a vaginal yeast infection. Call your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, changes in vaginal discharge, or other new symptoms.
Tell your doctor right away if you experience any of these rare but serious side effects: dark urine, persistent nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, yellowing of the eyes or skin, easy bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat or fever.
Amoxil can also rarely cause a serious intestinal illness caused by a bacterium called C. difficile. This condition may occur during treatment or several weeks or months after stopping treatment. Tell your doctor right away if you experience: persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain, blood in your stools.
Contraindication
A product that may interact with this drug is methotrexate.
Amoxicillin may give false positive results in urine testing for certain diabetic drugs (copper sulfate). This drug may also affect the results of some lab tests. Make sure lab staff and your doctors know you are using this medicine.
