indication
The medicine is used in adults and children. The active substance is cytarabine.
Cytarabine belongs to a group of drugs called cytotoxic drugs; they are used in the treatment of acute leukemia (blood cancer in which there are too many white blood cells in the body). Cytarabine interrupts the growth of cancer cells, which are then destroyed.
Remission induction (called induction) is an intensive treatment that is used to make the leukemia go away. When the treatment works, the distribution of cells in your blood returns to normal and your health improves. This relatively healthy phase is called remission.
Maintenance therapy is a milder therapy aimed at maintaining remission for as long as possible. He uses fairly low doses of cytarabine to control leukemia and prevent recurrence of the disease.
contraindication
The drug must not be used
if you are allergic to cytarabine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
if the cell count in your lab report is very low due to some other non-cancerous cause or as determined by your doctor.
if you have increased problems with body coordination after radiation therapy or treatment with another cancer medicine such as methotrexate.
Dosage of Cytarabine Accord
Recommended dose
Your doctor will determine the dose of cytarabine based on your condition, whether you are on induction or maintenance therapy, and your body surface area. This is calculated based on your weight and height.
Regular check-ups, including blood tests, are necessary during treatment. Your doctor will tell you how often this should be done. Your doctor will regularly check the following, among other things:
Your blood to be checked for a decrease in the number of blood cells that may need treatment.
your liver (again with blood tests) to make sure cytarabine is not adversely affecting liver function.
your kidneys (again with blood tests) to make sure cytarabine is not adversely affecting kidney function.
Blood uric acid levels, since cytarabine can increase blood uric acid levels. If your uric acid levels are too high, you may be given another medicine.
If you are on dialysis, the doctor may change when you give the medicine because dialysis can make the medicine less effective.
If you use more than you should
High doses can make side effects worse, such as mouth ulcers, or decrease the number of white blood cells and platelets in the blood (platelets help blood clot). In this case, you may need antibiotics or a blood transfusion. Mouth ulcers can be treated so that they do not cause discomfort as they heal.
If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Warnings and Precautions
Please talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before using the medicine. Special care is required when using
if your bone marrow is already suppressed, therapy should be initiated under close medical supervision.
if you suffer from liver disease.
Cytarabine causes a severe decrease in the formation of blood cells in the bone marrow. This can make you more prone to infection or bleeding. The blood cell count may continue to drop for up to a week after stopping treatment. Your doctor will check your blood regularly and may examine your bone marrow.
This can cause serious and sometimes life-threatening side effects in the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, or lungs.
During treatment with cytarabine, liver and kidney function should be monitored. In patients with impaired liver function, cytarabine should be administered with extreme caution prior to initiation of therapy.
During treatment, high levels of uric acid (indicating the destruction of cancer cells) in the blood (hyperuricemia) may occur. Your doctor will tell you if you need medication to control these high levels.
During treatment with cytarabine, the administration of live or attenuated vaccines is not recommended. Seek medical attention if necessary. The use of killed or inactivated vaccines may not give the desired effect due to the suppression of the immune system by cytarabine.
Be sure to tell your doctor if you have had radiation therapy.
Ability to drive and use machines
Cytarabine does not affect your ability to drive or use machines. However, cancer treatment in general can affect the ability of some patients to drive and use machines. If this happens to you, you should not drive or use machinery.
