It applies to
This is a medicine used to lower high blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes (type 2 diabetes); especially in overweight patients whose blood sugar levels are not adequately controlled by diet and exercise alone.
adult
Your doctor may prescribe the drug alone (monotherapy) or in combination with other oral blood sugar-lowering drugs or insulin.
children and young people
The doctor may prescribe the drug alone (monotherapy) or in combination with insulin for children from 10 years old and adolescents.

contraindication
Medicine cannot be taken
if you are allergic to metformin hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine;
if you have severe kidney problems.
if you have uncontrolled diabetes, such as severe hyperglycemia (very high blood sugar), nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis, or ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is a condition in which substances called “ketone bodies” build up in the blood, which can lead to diabetic precoma. Symptoms include abdominal pain, rapid and deep breathing, drowsiness, or unusual fruity breath;
if you have liver problems;
if you suffer from acute conditions that can lead to impaired kidney function, for example. B.
fluid loss due to persistent vomiting or severe diarrhea
if you have a serious infection, such as an infection of the lungs, bronchi, or kidneys. Severe infections can lead to kidney problems, putting you at risk of developing lactic acidosis (lactic acidosis) (see Advice for Patients category).
circulatory failure (shock),
Studies with the introduction of iodine-containing contrast agents into the vessels before, during and up to 48 hours after the study;
if you suffer from acute or chronic diseases that can lead to a lack of oxygen in the tissues of the body:
if you are being treated for heart failure or have recently had a heart attack, have serious circulation problems (such as shock), or have difficulty breathing. This can lead to a lack of oxygen in the tissues, putting you at risk of developing lactic acidosis (lactic acidosis) (see Patient Information category).
in violation of liver function, in acute alcohol poisoning, alcoholism;
if you are breastfeeding.
Be sure to ask your doctor for advice
if you are going to have an x-ray or other imaging test where you will be given an iodinated contrast agent. Dosage of Glucophage 500 mg
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Adult Dosage Guide
This dose strength is appropriate when higher doses of metformin hydrochloride are required.

Use in children and adolescents
Dosage instructions for children over 10 years of age and adolescents
Monotherapy and combination therapy with insulin:
The usual dose is initially one 500 mg film-coated tablet or one 850 mg film-coated tablet per day (equivalent to 500–850 mg metformin hydrochloride) taken with or after a meal.
Other strengths are available for the 850mg dosage.
The dose may be increased to the maximum recommended daily dose of 4 film-coated tablets of 500 mg each or 2 film-coated tablets of 1000 mg each (equivalent to 2 g of metformin hydrochloride).
If you have impaired kidney function, your doctor may prescribe a lower dose for you.
In patients with renal insufficiency and GFR from 45 to 59 ml / min, the initial dose is 500 mg or 850 mg of metformin hydrochloride once a day. The maximum daily dose is 2000 mg per day, divided into 2-3 single doses. In case of impaired renal function with GFR from 30 to 44 ml / min, the maximum daily dose is 1000 mg, divided into 2-3 doses per day. The drug should not be used in severely impaired renal function. During treatment, your doctor will check your kidney function at least once a year, or more often if you are older and/or your kidney function is deteriorating.
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect is too strong or too weak.
If you take more than you should

Ingestion/use with other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/have used or might take/use any other medicines.
If you need to inject an iodine-containing contrast agent into your blood, for example, in connection with an x-ray or CT scan, you must stop taking the tablets before or during the injection. Your doctor will decide when you need to stop treatment and when you can start treatment again.
With long-term drug therapy with the drug, both the initiation and termination of additional drug therapy can impair blood sugar control.
Tell your doctor if you are taking/using, have recently taken/have used or might take/use any other medicines.
Your blood sugar and kidney function may need to be checked more often, or your doctor may need to adjust your dose of tablets.
It is especially important to mention the following medicines:
Medications that increase urination (diuretics)
Medications to treat pain and inflammation (NSAIDs and COX-2 inhibitors such as ibuprofen and celecoxib)
certain medicines used to treat high blood pressure (ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor antagonists).
Also tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken the following medicines:
Corticosteroids, some asthma medications (ß-sympathomimetics), and iodine-based or alcohol-based contrast agents.
Consumed with alcohol
Avoid excessive alcohol consumption while taking, as this may increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
